Connecting to our Heritage

Tucked away in a vibrant city neighbourhood off Baggot Street, Dylan Hotel is more than a luxury destination, it is a building steeped in history, character, and quiet resilience.

The year was 1900 when Sir Albert Edward Murray designed what would become the Dylan Hotel today. Originally built to house trainee nurses working at the Royal City of Dublin Hospital, the building has long been a place of care, dedication, and historical connection. Today, we honour that legacy not just in spirit, but in the very details of our hotel.

The Eddison Restaurant

Miss Edith Annie Eddison served as matron of the Royal City of Dublin Hospital from 1909 to 1917. During her tenure, she lived in the nurse’s home, now the Dylan Hotel, and led her team through one of the most turbulent times in Irish history during the 1916 Rising.

Under her guidance, nurses worked tirelessly, day and night, to care for wounded soldiers, civilians, and volunteers. Her leadership was marked by compassion and courage, and today, we honour her legacy through The Eddison Restaurant which proudly bears her name in tribute to her strength and kindness shown during her time at the nurses home.

The Ruby Room

From 1927 to 1960, Miss Ruby V. Stokes served as matron of the Royal City of Dublin Hospital. Her office and bedroom were located on the ground floor of the nurse’s home, right where The Ruby Room stands today.

Miss Stokes was known for her watchful eye and unwavering standards. She ensured curfews were kept and gentlemen callers were turned away at reception. Today, The Ruby Room honours her legacy, not only in name but in design. Our handcrafted tables, made by a skilled veneerist on Ireland’s west coast, feature intricate patterns inspired by the nurses' badges. It is a subtle detail, but one we invite you to discover next time you visit.

The room’s aesthetic also draws inspiration from 1920s design, connecting to the early 1900s when our building stood proudly in Victorian Dublin. Every piece of furniture and every design choice pays recognition and acknowledgement to the era in addition to the remarkable women who once called this place home.

The Nurserie Terrace

Our soulful south-facing courtyard, The Nurserie, is a playful tribute to the building’s past as a nurse’s home and a celebration of nature and renewal. The name blends the idea of a nursery with the rich planting that surrounds the space, many of which are of Victorian heritage.

Whether you are sipping wine under the stars or enjoying brunch in the sunshine, The Nurserie offers a year-round escape and is an urban oasis where history and hospitality meet in chic surroundings in a vibrant city neighbourhood.
