The Dylan Edit Your Window into Dublin’s Finest

Impressionism at Dylan Library

- Posted on: 08/08/2025 - $itemValue.title

Gerard Byrne, born in Dublin in 1958, is widely recognised as Ireland’s leading Modern Impressionist. With over 35 years of work, his vibrant oil paintings, known for expressive brushwork and masterful light, are held in collections worldwide, including the Irish Government and Citadelle Art Museum in Texas.

Largely self-taught, Byrne’s art reflects a life shaped by global travel and personal experience. In 2017, he and his wife Agata founded the Gerard Byrne Studio in Ranelagh, Dublin, a gallery and creative hub dedicated to showcasing his evolving artistic practice.

Gerard Byrne has worked in botanical gardens all over the world, but we have selected one of his pieces from our National Botanical Gardens in Glasnevin. His piece sits beautifully over the marble fireplace in the library.

Gerard Byrne has a small gallery of paintings on display in this location, being both close to his original home and childhood.

For me, the Botanical Gardens reminds me of starting to paint as a young boy. I would have started my early days in painting in the palm houses because it was a place to escape the wind and rain during the Irish Winter.

On a recent visit, Gerard captured our hotel in a beautifully detailed architectural landscape, an inspired piece created in the lead-up to the Baggatonia Festival, held annually in September.

Why not relax in the serenity of our Library and immerse yourself into the fabulous artwork of Gerard Byrne.
